It wasn't that long ago when a client called me up and asked me if I could help him out with a project. "We're going to put on a rodeo and I was hoping you could help out by making a logo and poster." This was a standard conversation in my life as I had started my design business just a little over a year before. "Sure! Let's setup a meeting." That's a sentence that has changed my life drastically. Especially come around August. This was the beginning of my time working in rodeo.
Now this might not seem like that big of a deal. Making a logo and a poster ' be a truly life changing experience for anyone, especially someone who chose this as a career. However, if you know me you know the odds of me just doing a poster is not very likely. I have a tendency to get sucked into things I think are cool.
What started as a small print job turned into a large pro-bono couple hundred hours a year gig. I couldn't love the thing more. Each year I now support the following duties.
- Print Marketing
- Social Media Marketing
- Search Engine Optimization
- Online Ticket Sales / Point Of Sale
- Fantasy Rodeo Draft Presentation
- Website Design and Development
- Ticket Graphics
- Television Ads
- Sponsorship Banners
- Event Program
- Sponsorship Recruitment Materials
- Press Liaison
- Hype Events Promotion
- Multimedia Experience During Performance
- Make everything else I forgot about look good.
- Drinking beer at 9:30pm when we are done.
Here is why I love the event. The guys and gals that are on the rodeo committee with me are amazing and do it all for free, with all the proceeds going to youth agriculture organizations. All in all, over $60,000 has been raised since the event started in 2010.
When we first started we had a small break even operation and a decent but not amazing crowd there to support us. Last year was the first year for us as a pro PRCA Rodeo Rodeo and we were at standing room capacity both nights, which helped us give back more then $15,000 to our beneficiaries. We upped the anti this year with an extra Thursday night performance and more prize money.
What I am most proud of is how great the show has become. We have fireworks, a giant 17 foot video board that does replays, helicopters, rodeo clowns, the bull scramble (check that out here), and so much more. We push the design and production each year to be bigger and better! The community has responded better then any of us could have hoped.
Here is some visuals of the work we have done!
