5 Interface trends of 2018 You Should Definitely Know About

Find me on:

Trends are always on the move, so you never know which ones will be used in the coming years and which ones will be left behind. We put together a list of 5 Interface Trends that we believe will be here for years to come. You might notice that every one of the web examples has some form of each of the trends on their site. Coincidence? We think not.

Animations / Interaction

People like shiny and eye popping objects. Take advantage of this and grab your website visitor's attention by adding some animation and transition to your 2010 icons. This will add movement to your static website and direct people's attention to the part of your website you want... like maybe that call-to-action you really want them to click on. Animated GIFs are also on the up and up thanks to the memes that have totally broken the internet. If you're looking for fun ways to add some “Movement Spice” to your website, GIFs might be a great option. Oh, by the way, are the Spice Girls still in? Asking for a friend.

Looking for inspiration on how to use this interface trend? We went through the trouble of finding sites that we think do it best. Check out Epicurrence and Labwork Studio for some examples.

Video Content

With today’s technology, pretty much everyone owning a GoPro, and the “I want it now" lifestyle, more and more websites are following this awesome trend - VIDEO CONTENT. Web visitors want their content quick and easy. Whether you have a simple video playing in the background of a full-width div or a full video production featured on your home page, video content is a great way to put more authentic content in front of your viewer, add motion to an otherwise static site, and personalize your content. With all these great benefits, we don’t see this trend going anywhere anytime soon.

If you are looking for websites that do video content the best, check out Found Studio and RedBull's timeline of Lilou. Go ahead, check it out. We'll wait.

Typography

What's worse than having bad content? Having awesome content that the viewer just can't read. Probably the most important part of any design is having legible content. The interweb now has thousands of web friendly fonts available at your finger click, unlike the days of the Space Jam website. This means that there is pretty much zero reason that visitors to your site shouldn't be able to ready your content. Here are some websites that took it a step further and use type in beautiful ways: Nurture Digital and BuzzWorthy Studio

Hidden Navigation

Few things are more frustrating than not having your site's navigation fit into the navigation bar at the top of your website. We believe that the key to great navigation is keeping it very simple. Having a max of 8 main navigation pages should help you prioritize your most important pages and keep your content organized. We found the following sites that use hidden navigation in great ways to display their content:

Accessibility

You can put all the effort in the world into making your website shine, but not everyone will be able to see or understand the beautiful content you have available. You should totally have your website ADA Compliant for the viewers that might have a disability. When creating digital content, make sure to consider the following:

  • Do not rely on color as a navigational tool or as the sole way to differentiate items
  • Images should include Alt text in the markup/code; complex images should have more extensive descriptions near the image (perhaps as a caption or descriptive summaries built right into a neighboring paragraph)
  • Functionality should be accessible through mouse and keyboard and be tagged to worked with voice-control systems
  • Provide transcripts for podcasts
  • If you have a video on your site, you must provide visual access to the audio information through in-sync captioning
  • Sites should have a skip navigation feature
  • Consider 508 testing to assure your site is in compliance with the ADA
Convinced yet? We sure are. These interface trends are here to stay and will add some extra pizzazz to your website. Are you ready to take the next step in your marketing? We'd love to talk to you about some options! Click the button below to get started.
